Big Belly Bins - Future Street Bins

22.1.26

The request was made following a fire risk assessment for which FirePro UK were able to tailor a solution to meet and exceed client needs. The restricted space around the compactor and bin opening, required precise positioning of the FirePro FP20 unit to ensure that the suppression agent discharged directly into the waste storage area, while avoiding interference with the moving compactor components. Achieving the correct mounting height and angle was critical to ensure optimal agent dispersion, safety, and ease of maintenance access. Too low would interfere with system effectiveness and create an obstruction, too high would have caused the agent to impact the compactor walls and bin opening, compromising performance. This was solved by the FirePro UK team.

A UK NHS Hospital Trust committed to installing a large quantity of the smart bins, in the general public circulation areas outside, but also identified there was a fire risk from inside the bin itself, such as careless cigarette disposal, depositing lithium-ion cells, or even arson attack. FirePro UK were approached with the request to provide automatic fire detection and suppression within the waste bin.

An FP20 standalone FirePro unit with bulb thermo actuator head was proposed and installed. This gave a high degree of flexibility, enabling precise orientation and angling to ensure effective and consistent fire suppression coverage across the surface risk area, without compromise to the compactor mechanism. It was also on the strict understanding that we were unable to guarantee a deep-seated fire would be fully extinguished, therefore something was better than nothing.

Installation was quick and straightforward, with each unit typically fitted in under fifteen minutes which minimised disruption. The design also facilitated quick simple inspection and maintenance so that the FirePro unit could be easily accessed, removed, or reinstated when required. In addition, the robust construction of the FirePro unit, combined with the protected inward-facing orientation of the Bulb Thermal Activation (BTA) device, significantly reduced the risk of accidental impact, vandalism, or environmental damage. The client was satisfied that by installing FirePro they had reduced the risk of harm caused by fire to the general public.

By installing localised fire suppression, at a very low cost, the client is satisfied that this measure has assisted in achieving our aims of reducing the risk of harm to all relevant persons whilst on our premises.
